The daily chant
The class writes them. The class keeps them.
The Anchor Agreements cost one sheet of chart paper and one morning in the first week of school. They are what the room holds itself to for the rest of the year, and they are the reason the twenty minutes holds.
Two questions, eyes closed if they want
Where did you sparkle and shine yesterday?
Then: where do you plan on sparkling and shining today?
Each child picks their own Agreement to work on. Not assigned, not tracked. I am going to work on self-discipline today. I am going to work more on showing compassion for all beings. It is an internal moment. A couple of volunteers share if they want to, and if nobody volunteers the teacher goes first.
Two minutes. Then the academic day begins, in a room that has already decided who it intends to be today.
