About

Twenty-four years in the room.

I have been an elementary teacher for twenty-four years. I have handed out the tickets. I have run the color charts. I have watched a system reward the children who were already fine and quietly sort everyone else.

I learned the Good Things practice as a student teacher in 2002, in a district using brain-based learning. For eighteen years I ran it every Monday — my students wrote three good things that had happened to them over the weekend.

In 2021 I made 10 Good Things a daily practice. There was a boy that year who walked out of class. Never on the day we did our Good Things. Going daily with Good Things is what stopped his walkouts.

A week before winter break, one of my students asked me a question I hadn't expected:

"Can we take the 3Gs packet home over break?"

The rest of the room echoed her before I could answer. Most of them wanted to take the packets home.

That was when I understood what it had become. It was not school stuff to them anymore. It was their own daily practice, and they did not want to set it down for two weeks.

Thus, the seed was planted. It grew into the "I've Got the Power" Daily Journal.

One child, one classroom, one community at a time.
